How Walmart reports its numbers

Walmart’s financial year ends on 31 January. So “fiscal 2026” (FY26) runs from 1 February 2025 to 31 January 2026, which is mostly calendar year 2025. This is the most common reason figures look wrong on other websites.

Two terms also matter. Net sales is money from goods and services sold. Total revenues is net sales plus membership and other income ($6.75bn in FY26). Walmart’s headline figure of $713.2bn is total revenues; net sales were $706.4bn.

Walmart revenue and profit

Revenue has grown every year. Between FY22 and FY26 it rose by about 24.5%, which is roughly 5.6% a year. Growth in FY26 was 4.7%.

In FY26, Walmart kept about 4.2% of revenue as operating income and about 3.1% as consolidated net income. Net income attributable to Walmart shareholders was $21.893bn, because part of the profit belongs to minority owners of some subsidiaries. If you want a plain explanation of how revenue differs from profit, see the financial aspects of starting and running a business.

Latest quarter: in Q2 FY27 (to 31 July 2026), Walmart reported revenue of $187.937bn and operating income of $9.383bn. The next results are due on 19 November 2026.

How many stores does Walmart have?

Walmart had 10,955 stores and clubs on 31 January 2026, and 11,000 on 31 July 2026. The two numbers do not clash. They are simply counted on different dates. Note that 11,000 is the global total. The United States has about 5,200 units.

Keeping thousands of shops stocked takes a huge distribution network, the same job that third-party logistics providers do for smaller firms.

How many people work at Walmart?

Walmart employed about 2.1 million associates worldwide at the end of FY26, including about 1.6 million in the U.S. “Associate” is Walmart’s word for employee. Both numbers are approximate and include part-time staff. Walmart is widely described as the largest private employer in the U.S., but that is a company claim rather than an audited ranking.

As a rough guide, $713.163bn of revenue spread across 2.1 million associates is about $339,600 per person. Treat that as a simple ratio only, because it ignores part-time hours and the mix of businesses.

How many customers shop at Walmart?

Walmart says about 280 million customers and members visit its stores and websites each week across 19 countries. This counts visits, so someone who shops three times in a week is counted three times. It is not a count of unique shoppers, and Walmart does not publish one.

Walmart e-commerce, advertising and membership stats

Online sales are now about a fifth of Walmart’s net sales. Global e-commerce grew 24% in FY26 to about $150.4bn. The U.S. business makes up two-thirds of that.

Walmart does not disclose how many people pay for Walmart+. Any number you see online is a third-party estimate. Walmart Connect sells ad space to brands on its sites and in its stores. Smaller firms can reach customers more cheaply, as these small business advertising ideas show.

Walmart International

Walmart International had $130.4bn of net sales in FY26, up about 7%, and 5,743 units in 18 countries at year end. It operates retail and online businesses in Africa, Canada, Central America, Chile, China, India and Mexico. In India, its interests include Flipkart and PhonePe. Walmart has not published ownership percentages in the sources checked here, so read the 10-K before quoting them. Trading across borders brings extra rules and costs, which our guide to the import export business explains.

Walmart vs Amazon, Costco, Target and Kroger

Fortune’s 2026 Global 500 puts Amazon first and Walmart second by revenue, ending Walmart’s 12-year run at the top. Among traditional retailers, Walmart is far larger than its rivals.

Walmart$713.2bn Costco$269.9bn Kroger$147.6bn Target$104.8bn Walmart: total revenues, year to 31 Jan 2026. Others: latest annual report figures, fiscal 2025 (different year-ends).

Compare these with care. Costco, Target and Kroger report net sales or total sales, and their financial years end on different dates. Amazon also earns a large share of its revenue from cloud services, so it is not a like-for-like retail comparison.

Walmart stock and dividend facts

Walmart shares trade on Nasdaq under the ticker WMT. If you want a live price, check when the stock market opens first. Walmart raised its annual dividend to $0.99 per share for FY27 and announced a new $30 billion share buyback in February 2026.
